I also love that there are restaurants that serve gluten-free pasta and desserts in Phnom Penh! What is the worst thing about living in Phnom Penh? The transient nature of Cambodia is difficult, regardless of your city of residence. In addition, the city is home to dozens of expat-oriented bars and pubs, including many, many girly bars, a couple of nightclubs, and even a rock-n-roll bar

The major memorial to the victims of the Khmer Rouge is at the Killing Fields of Choeng Ek -a former concentration camp just outside Phnom Penh, where tens of thousands of dissidents and undesirables where put to their deaths from 1975 to 1979. Heading through the park on the other side of the street you come to Wat Botum , a typical example of a Cambodian Buddhist temple full of friendly young monks who will eagerly show you around, if only to practice their English

Cambodian Immigration police will issue you a Visa on arrival (they will ask for a tip though, so it is really best to get a Visa on-line or at the Cambodian Consulate in Bangkok.A less known (but much better) bus service that goes directly from Bangkok to the Cambodian Border at Poipet is available from Ekamai (Eastern) Bus Terminal on Sukhumvit Road. It is only a short walk to the border from the market and you can stock up on drinks and snacks, or even go shopping and change money at the bank, for the trip to Siem Reap

It is served by some buses and plenty of share taxis. There are several companies operating buses between Phnom Penh and Siem Reap, and services depart between 6.30am and 12.30pm. The boats dock in different places at different times of the year; when the lake recedes in the dry season, both the port and floating village move with it

As with the rest of the country, Siem Reap's history (and the memories of its people) is coloured by the spectre of the brutal Khmer Rouge Regime, though since Pol Pot's death in 1998, relative stability and a rejuvenated tourist industry have been important steps in an important, if tentative, journey forward to recovery. The main town is concentrated around Sivutha Street and the Psar Chas area (Old Market area) where there are old colonial buildings, shopping and commercial districts

Though the lotus themed architecture seem to emulate temples from over the border, the front gate integrates Bayon style heads and a scene in relief of the Buddha seated under a tree, while armies fire arrows on one side and others are eaten by crocodiles on his other, that looks like it could have been taken directly from Angkorian mural. Small Khmer run hotels and guest houses, especially in the low season, can be surprisingly good value if you are willing to do a bit of hunting for one that hasn't been overrun by the guidebook toting hoards

Phnom Penh's lack of coordinated public transport gives jobs to many poor provincial immigrants, who - with their wheels - harangue any pedestrian in the city centre, particularly tourists. The quality of buses runs the gamut, with the less desirable buses being a few dollars cheaper than more comfortable buses (for example on-board movie)

This new movement was called "New Khmer Architecture" and was often characterised by a fusion of Bauhaus, European post-modern architecture, and traditional elements from Angkor. Inside the tree she found four Buddha statues and one of Vishnu (the numbers vary on different tellings.) The discovery was taken as a divine blessing, and to some a sign that the Khmer capital was to be brought to Phnom Penh from Angkor

Hotels and guesthouses are spread across city, though there is a greater concentration toward the city center, especially in Boeung Keng Kang 1 area and popular riverside area. Situated at the confluence of three great rivers - known as the 'Chaktomuk' (four faces) or 'Quatre Bras' (four arms) of the Mekong, Tonle Sap and Bassac rivers - Phnom Penh is a city of more than 2 million people, the capital of Cambodia and the country's commercial, economic and political hub

I was thouroughly acclimatised by then, so I just baked myself to a crisp, but many Westerners on that boat spent their time at Siem Reap being mistaken for over-cooked lobsters. If you must hire a tuk-tuk from the landing, make sure the driver is wearing a vest with his number on it, that way if he tries to double the price, (it will already be very high), just take down his number and threaten to report him

They were very persistent, telling us that cars can't go into Siem Reap (they can), they didn't know the hotel, etc., but we simply said we wouldn't pay until we were at our hotel. Make sure you get an idea of where the buildings are located (Wikitravel has a handy map, and seat61.com shows pictures of the buildings) so you don't end up in one of the tout zones

cambodia road is totally unsafe at night! i have bee a pillion rider on a motorbike so many times, i always fear for my life whenever i see the cars zooming past me from the other direction. The roads are bad enough by daylight but hitting a wandering buffalo or two at night at speed, even in a bus, simply does not bear thinking about in a country with no emergency evacuation, no public ambulance services or other emergency medical services

A word of caution on the boat, while I hadn't personally been on it, I think the water level can have a bearing on the length of the journey I presume we're in the dry season or very near it at the moment? I would ask around to see how long it will take. Has anyone taken this travel in the last few months? I was originally going to take a train from bangkok but I dont have the amount of time I would like

It's a picturesque, 4 - 6 hour journey across the Tonle Sap and up the Sangker River in the wet season, but can be considerably longer (8-11 hours) in the dry season due to low water levels. One-month visas are available at Cambodian embassies, and much more conveniently, on arrival at the international airports in Siem Reap and Phnom Penh as well as at most overland international border crossings with Thailand, Vietnam and Laos
