Making the correct association may be useful, but since you are already seeing inside the Pages file I suspect it is not the thing you really need to do. Someone may have a good idea about that (it really doesn't have anything to do with Microsoft Office!) but what I would probably do is start by opening the xml file in something like XML Notepad (it's a free download) and look through it until I found stuff that looked like the text of a document rather than options and layout
