I checked the pressure of the expansion tank and found it out of spec, and when I adjusted the pressure I noticed a foul rotten smell coming from the air inside the tank (for those not familiar, the tank is half air, half water, with a rubber wall between the two halves, allowing the air to compress and absorb the extra pressure when the water heats up).
