I can't take the credit for this info as I found it online after doing some Googling, but it turns out that the Clearing the fluff (and therefore curing the problem) is easy. Lint that does collect in the dock connector is much easier to get out with a blast of air, which doesn't work with the earphone connector since the tube mostly blocks the hole
