Granted it's been a while since I did this so I may have forgotten to mention a step or know all the different methods but save states definitely don't work since restoring from one of those also restores the effect of the code. The only way to return to normal is kill the codes and do an ingame save (forget save states) and then then restart the game and continuing from the main menu (make sure you don't have the option for automatic loading of save states ticked)
