This whole mess is the result of Dell trying to protect the mobo and battery (life and fire prevention) but packing too much wiring into a too small package. Not being able to figure out why the wireless wasn't working after trying a lot of things suggested by people with a lot more linux knowledge than I, I proceeded to totally re-install the Dell Inspiron 1525 Ubuntu Hardy 2GB image, hooked up to the internet and downloaded the 100+ updates (an icon showed up in the top right hand corner telling me to update) which took over an hour, and lo and behold, the wireless then worked, all by itself! I thought I'd let you know, in case you come anyone else with that problem
